Arthritis : Resting a local joint to prevent mobility could be due to suspicion of a fracture of underlying bone , partial or full thickness tear of a tendon or simply aggregation of underlying arthritis requiring rest and to avoid mobility for a short term . Activity and range of motion to one's tolerance is always encouraged in arthritis.

Ask your doctor: Why don't you ask the doctor who did it? Casting in RA is not done very frequently as you do not want to immobilize joints but rather want to move and exercise them.
