Not well: Ultrasound looks at organs in the abdomen. Organs best visualized with by ultrasound include liver, spleen, gall bladder, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, appendix, uterus, and ovaries. The organ known as stomach is not well visualized by ultrasound and is seen better by upper gastrointestinal series and ct examination. Nuclear medicine studies evaluate emptying function of stomach.

Not usually: While the stomach can be identified on ultrasound this is not the best way to evaluate it. Most stomach problems are best demonstrated using a scope passed through the esophagus into the stomach by a gastroenterologist. Radiologists can image the stomach with an upper GI study using swallowed barium and xrays. Ct scans may also see stomach problems in some patients.
