When comfortable: Actually, you should be able to walk up stairs almost immediately after umbilical hernia repair, just take it easy as you do it. You should avoid heavy lifting and direct abdominal wall trauma for 4 to 6 weeks postop. Listen to your body -- if you go to do something, and you feel pain, that's your body saying don't do that. It's best to ask your operative surgeon what you can and can't do.
