About 45 minutes: Umbilical hernia repair surgery can be done laparoscopically or open (both work very well). The surgeon will probably put mesh in to prevent recurrence. Depending on the size of the hernia, the repair takes 35 to 60 minutes. It is a very common procedure and is quite safe. Risks include bleeding (rare), infection, or recurrence of the hernia.
