A member asked:

I have pernicious anemia - must i give up alcohol?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Certainly: Pernicious anemia is due to vitamin B12 deficiency. Alcohol in many ways can contribute to B12 deficiency: 1. Interferes with b vitamin absorption - alcoholics also do not have enough b vitamins in their diet 2. May cause gastritis leading to poor acid secretion in stomach (acid helps B12 absorption) 3. May cause intestinal damage leading to malabsorption. Thus, better to avoid alcohol!
