TMJ pain: Take some advil, (ibuprofen) motrin, or aleve; moist warm compress to outside of face just in front of ears; soft diet; no gum chewing; this is short term palliative treatment. See a local dentist with experience and knowledge treating patients with tmd\tmj pain. He\she will help with both short term relief and evaluation for long term prevention.

A few things: Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.
