See Periodontist: If your gums are receeding, especially if you have short roots, you can't wait. Please ask your dentist to refer you to a gum specialist, a periodontist, to determine the cause of the recession and the appropriate treatment. Recession can be caused by gum disease, malocclusion, overly aggressive brushing, and many other reasons. Get help of specialist.

Perio: Perio disease is irreversible but can be stemmed. Good hygiene and making sure the areas are cleanable and disease is removed can help in stopping progress. If the loss has gotten to a point of mobility than retention can be used or if too severe, removal may be needed with replacement by multiple options, if implants being the best. See a periodontist to answer your questions.
