Gas release: Most commonly due to nitrogen gas in the metatarsal joint of the first toe. If you are concerned about a "cracked bone" making noise, this would not make a repeated popping sound and the pain, swelling and discoloration would be considerable. If you continue to manipulate the toe you may create soreness or swelling.

Possible : From trauma a while back, at your age it should not be hallux limitus or arthritis. Do you have a bunion?
