A member asked:

Why in most operations do they put tubes down the patients throat. ?

General anesthesia: This is called a general or inhalation anesthetic. The tube is used to be attached to a respirator to breath for the patient as this level of anesthesia causes respiratory depression and used to deliver the inhalation anesthetic as well. This type of anesthesia is used when more invasive procedures are required.

Dr. Alvin Lin answered

Intubation: Once patient is knocked out, he can't feel pain or move or breathe which is why we have to breathe for him. That tube actually goes down trachea (windpipe to lungs), not throat (esophagus to stomach), in order to allow anesthesiologist to use machine to breathe for patient.
