Viral infection?: The nasal mucosa produces about a quart of mucus daily and this mucus (phlegm) is swallowed and to the patient can feel like mucus in the throat. The buccal (cheek) mucosa, the pharyngeal mucosa also contains glands which secrete mucus into the throat. You either are aware of normal mucus production or you may have a viral uri. If the latter, 10-14 days is the usual duration of a viral infection.

Expectorants: Try Mucinex (guaifenesin) as an expectorant or tea with lemon. If the phlegm is behind your soft palate, you may do better by rinsing out your nose with saline solution. Use a neil-med sinus rinse bottle or netty pot with warm saline solution. Regularly.

Various treatments.: Without an actual examination, I cannot give specific medical advice on your particular health, but here is some good general information. Bacterial infection(strep throat) is helped by antibiotics. Allergic, viral, traumatic or other irritations won't be helped by them. Cold foods, soothing foods and/or anti-inflammatories can help in those other cases. (think smoothies).

Throat Mucus: Greetings. The fastest way to rid of the mucus in your throat is to gargle with salt water. Also make sure you are drinking enough liquids, sleep with a humidifier and consider Mucinex (guaifenesin). Finally nasal saline rinse like NeilMed. This works to rid the thick mucus in the throat.

You might try N-acetyl cysteine 600 mg 2x daily. This is called Mucomyst when given by neb treatments in the hospital. It is cheap and safe.
