Guaifenesin: Guaifenesin can help loosen phlegm and thin secretions, making them easier to expel with coughing or clearing of throat.

Sinus or Reflux?: Thick mucus in the throat is due to irritation to the mucosa. Generally this means either 1)irritation due to postnasal drip from allergies or chronic sinus infection, or 2)irritation from acid reflux (laryngopharyngeal, "silent" reflux). The former is treated with a nasal steroid spray and saline sinus rinses. The latter with acid suppressing meds. Your doctor can help pin down a specific cause.

Cough: The coughing mechanism is used to expel from the lungs and trachea as well as the back of your throat the mucus and debris to your mouth. Then you can either spit it out or swallow it.

Mucus: Hydrate well with water. Or consider using warm fluids like herbal teas or soups. Consider use of a humidifier to moisten the mucus. If this is a chronic problem - have it checked out medically. Take care.
