Not usually: Sometimes dealing with traumatic issues can increase emotional pain temporarily. It is sort of like going to the dentist. The numbing shot may hurt, but then the problem can be taken of & you can start healing. A good therapist will try to pace treatment so that you don't go too fast or too slow. You don't avoid but don't go too deep either.

Sometimes: Counseling can bring up memories, thoughts and emotions that have been held in the unconscious, or hidden, part of the psyche. Counseling can also help us to look at relationships or behaviors that we rely on but that aren't helping us, and when we start to give these up we can become depressed or anxious. However, this should be temporary and in general counseling should help and not hurt!
