A 48-year-old member asked:
what is a good way to determine if you have a hernia?
1 doctor answer • 4 doctors weighed in

Dr. Jarrod Kaufman answered
General Surgery 29 years experience
Hernia: Hernias can cause pain and more commonly when they are intermitently stuck or incarcerated in the defect. The will usually also cause some local bulging at the site of the hernia as well. You should have this issue evaluated by a medical professional and consider treatment if it is frequent or changes your ability to do normal daily activities.
This can easily be seen on physical exam by your doc.

Some hernias can be difficult to find on physical exam, and may require imaging studies to make the diagnosis.

Are bilateral femoral hernias common?
2 doctor answers • 2 doctors weighed in

Dr. Barry Rosen answered
General Surgery 34 years experience
Yes, in women.: In general, hernias are much more common in men than women (these are typically groin or inguinal hernias); however, femoral hernias are more common in women. Likewise, it is more common to have a hernia on one side rather than both, but "double" hernias do occur in about 10% of people who have a hernia on one side.

A 34-year-old member asked:
Is there such a thing as a sports hernia?
2 doctor answers • 6 doctors weighed in

Dr. Paul Harper answered
General Surgery 52 years experience
Yes: A sports hernia is a much more significant injury than a standard run-of-the-mill inguinal (groin) hernia. The damage is usually much more significant. I have seen several of these during my career and they are very difficult to fix properly. Nerves tend to be damaged, floor of the inguinal canal instead of being weakened is torn, and the sports hernia can encompass several layers instead of one.

A 48-year-old member asked:
Why are some people more prone to hernias than others?
2 doctor answers • 4 doctors weighed in

Dr. Barry Rosen answered
General Surgery 34 years experience
Congenital, Trauma: Many hernias develop during fetal life, although they may not manifest themselves until adulthood. Hernias often arise after abdominal surgery, and are more likely to occur following midline incisions. People who had wound infections, are overweight, and/or do a lot of heavy lifting are more prone to these types of ("incisional") hernias.

A 22-year-old member asked:
Why might I have developed a hernia?
2 doctor answers • 4 doctors weighed in

Dr. Barry Rosen answered
General Surgery 34 years experience
Variable.: Hernias are holes in the abdominal wall. They often develop in the groin region, belly button, or are associated with scars from prior operations. Many people are born with these, although it may take many years to develop. Excessive lifting, obesity, smoking, steroid use may all increase the risk of developing a hernia.
