Physical exam: Hernia is diagnosed on physical exam. A physician should perform the physical exam since a lay person might not be able to differentiate a hernia from a solid mass.

Lump: Usually there is a lump that may or may not cause discomfort. Typically, the lump will go away when your laying down, and be more prominent when your up and around. Sometimes it stays there. Your primary care provider can usually determine this on an exam quite easily.
