Not always: But wearing the proper helmet for the sport can be helpful. Helmets are very important - but they aren't a guarantee that you won't get a head injury.

Helmets: Helmets are use in football and other combat sports to prevent fractured skulls. The have never been nor have they been determined to prevent concussions. The energy developed by a head to head or head to body collision when the head stops and the brain continues to move is the source of the concussion. Not hitting with your head is the answer. We are teaching not to do this in combat sports.
