Constipation: This is a common complaint. Typically, it is related to dehydration with breast feeding, narcotic pain medications and inadequate soluble fiber. Drink extra water and get 30 grams per day of fiber. Consider stool softener if on pain meds. You can add miralax, (polyethylene glycol) too, if needed.

Lots of fiber: The best thing to do is not be constipated and not having to strain. This is best accomplished with drinking lots of water (or non caffeinated fluid) and at least 30 gm of fiber. At this point, over the counter can be useful along with soaking in warm water with epstein salt, not using paper but wash or use baby wipes to gently clean. Lidocaine cream can also help. See ur doc, if severe.
