Inflammation: Serum protein electrophoresis is a test that examines specific proteins in the blood, serum Albumin and alpha-1, alpha-2, beta, and gamma globulins. In the alpha-1 zone, alpha-1 antitrypsin (aat) is the major protein, which is involved in neutralizing enzymes secreted by inflammatory cells. Aat is increased in acute inflammation.
