Renal failure: If he continues to receive intravenous hydration then it can prevent him from dying from renal failure. I have been told that renal failure is a gentle way to die without significant pain. It may actually be an act of kindness to allow him to die in this manner. I am sorry for your anticipated loss. God bless.

Water deprivation: Water may prolong his life trmporarily, but the decision to withhold water and food should have been decided by dad before he arrived in hospice through a living will. The whole idea of withholding food and water is an ethical one to which there is no easy answer.

Food not needed.: Yes it is true. Giving intravenous fluid will prolong his sufferings, and prolong his death. If fluid is given by mouth it all will end up in his lungs, aspiration will cause him breathing difficulties. At the end of life patients are not hungry, and they have no desire to eat or drink. Doctors will help reduce his pain, shortness of breath, and anxiety. At this stage only 'comfort care' is need.
