Depends...: Depending on the type of tumor, it can feel hard or soft. The size of tumor can also vary immensely, depending on how fast it is growing and how long it has been there. Brain tumors do not stick outside your skull, but other tumors can. Also, not all masses are tumors. A biopsy is required to know what it is and how to treat it.

Varies: Tumors on the outside of the head tend to be either in the soft tissues of the skin or in the bone. The boney tumors tend to be hard and usually start out small and grow out from the skull. The tumors in the skin/scalp tend to be softer. These can grow to large sizes if there is no intervention. These may be benign (ie. Lipoma) or malignant (ie. Skin cancers).
