A member asked:

I had a microdiskectomy 5 days ago for sciatica & it has been getting worse every day (now more than before surgery). is this normal? will it go away?

Atypical: This is not a typical course after microdiscectomy. I would suggest that you seek the input and follow up with your surgeon.

Nerve inflammation: If there was pressure on the nerve by the disk, relieving pressure doesn't always take away pain right away. Sometimes nerve inflammation persists, but it does go away. Talk to your surgeon and if pain persists talk to your local pain specialist.

Scar vs Herniation: Given that you recently had a microdiscectomy, you could have re-herniated in the same area or developed scar tissue in the area causing pressure on the nerves that exit the spine. I would consult your surgeon to discuss you options, you may need new imaging to see if any changes have taken place.
