Tonsil stones: What you are describing sounds like tonsil stones, also called tonsilloliths. Some argue that these are food debris, others argue infection. I think they are a low grade infection, which is why there is pain, sore throat and why those balls smell so horrendously awful. Can be treated with gargling, water pick, manual disimpaction (not recommended) or even tonsillectomy. Discuss with your doctor.
