Break through bleed: It is common when a woman misses bcp for 2 days in a row to start to bleed. This is called break through bleeding. It is very important to try and take your bcp same time every day. When you are late your are likely to bleed, and the pill is less effective. I would recommend you use a back up method such as condoms for the rest of the pill pack.

Break through: Menstrual periods occur using birth control pills when the hormones are stopped, which occurs during the week of the "sugar pills". The hormones no longer maintain the lining of the uterus and bleeding occurs. This same situation occurs if pills are missed in the middle of the pack. It's also important to know that pregnancy protection may not be present during cycles when bcp are missed.
