Common error: Tinea versicolor is often mistaken for vitiligo by lay people and even a few non-specialist physicians. Tinea versicolor is probably the mildest of all diseases and extremely easy to treat, and vitiligo is refractory to treatment. If the lesions seem to come and go, or are darker than surrounding skin when you're not tanned, it's probably tinea versicolor. There's a few others that are less common.
