Can brushing too hard cause receding gums?

Dr. Denny Cho answered

Maybe: Brushing too hard is thought to cause gingival recession. Some feel that brushing too hard using a toothpaste that has abrasives is more harmful. Almost all toothpastes have abrasives to aid in removal of debris from the teeth. It is recommended to brush your teeth by holding your toothbrush with just a couple of fingers like holding a pen or pencil.

Yes: It sure can. Try to use gentle circular motions rather than the back and forth sawing action.
