Brushing too hard?: Brushing should not cause cuts in the gum. Perhaps you are brushing. Very hard with a hard brush. Either way this is not normal. Please change habit and if there are still cuts see a dentist for evaluation.

See your dentist: Getting cuts when brushing is not normal. See your dentist for a full eval and brushing review...Be certain to bring a list of any current medication you are taking so he/she may eval for possible interactions. Meanwhile, use a new very soft brush and brush with your non dominant hand...This may help relieve the pressure you're applying. Don't use any type of abrasive toothpaste.
