A member asked:

If someone has complete tetraplegia and therefore their heart will not beat autonomously, what is used to keep them alive? what happens to the heart during a heartbeat?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Tetraplegia: Even though a person is a tetraplegic, the heart will continue to beat automatically. There may be an increased sensitivity to input from the vagus nerve, without new complication, the heart will continue to beat. The complication likely to shorten life of tetraplegics is respiratory disease.
