Usually, surgery: Bunions are a progressive, bony deformity that can only be corrected through surgery. Physical examination and x-rays would determine which surgical procedure would be appropriate for the severity of your bunion. Custom made orthotics and adjusting ones shoegear may help accommodate the deformity, but only surgery can correct it.

Treating bunions: There is no conservative treatment that will correct a bunion--so called bunion correction splints may ease some symptoms but will not "train" the toe to go straight. Wider shoes, a toe spacer, and tube foam are the most common ways to treat the pain and discomfort. The only way to get rid of it permanently is surgery.
