As your doctor for : A bulging disc should not cause pain which is so severe that you can not function. Over the counter medication such aleve (naproxen) should improve you enough for a week. Rest, heat or cold packs should help.

NSAIDs: Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (nsaids) - ibuprofen/motrin usually help take the edge off. In the movies, they take a drink of whiskey for their pains and patients tell me that it helps. Positional changes (lying down on your back, with legs up on a chair/sofa, with hips and knees flexed 90 degrees) takes the tension off the muscles and sciatic nerve. Heat application helps too.
