No: Xrays of the cervical spine are good at evaluating for fractures, but not for looking at the discs, because the discs are soft tissue structures that do not show up well. Mri, however, is the preferred modality for evaluating the soft tissue structures such as the discs.

No: X-rays would not show a herniated disc. Diagnostic studies commonly used are a MRI or myelogram /ct. The work-up of disc problems is not typically performed in the er.
