Virus?: Tonsillitis is inflammation/infection of tonsils. We also refer to it as pharyngitis. Most often, it's caused by a virus, which will not respond to antibiotics. In other words, it'll take same amount of time to get over it regardless of whether you take antibiotics or not. Only strep will respond to antibiotics check out centor criteria (http://goo.Gl/msoflx) to determine if need antibiotics . .

Sore throat: Likely viral in nature, but should be seen by physician in order to have throat swabbed for strep as that is easily treatable with antibiotics.
