Checking optic nerve: The optic nerve is one of the easiest parts of the eye to examine without dilating, and cameras may even be able to photograph the optic nerve without dilating. Checking pupil reaction, of course, must be done before dilation, and sometimes there can be nuances in pupil size and reaction that the doctor should definitely check. Pupil reaction is often a sensitive indicator of optic nerve function.
