How does an eye doctor check the optic nerve?

observation: The optic nerve is the cable connecting the retina to the brain, carrying the visual information for sight. Ophthalmologists look at its entry structure at the back of the eye, check the pupils for proper reaction, and measure visual function including the field of vision to test whether the nerve is normal. A few imaging machines can help with this (termed otc).

Optic nerve exam: Eye doctors routinely check the following in optic nerve evaluation: pupils for apd, color vision, visual field, optical coherence tomography, and clinical exam. Either an ophthalmologist or optometrist focused on medical disease may do this.
