Not normal: It's not normal but it happens commonly for a variety of reasons. Abnormalities in your heart prior to surgery, difficulty handling the blood and fluids administered with surgery, rhythm disturbances, swelling (edema) related to the surgery itself, anemia from blood loss, stiffness of the heart muscle from sutures, surgery, and anesthesia - to name a a few. It should get better but needs treatment.

Water retention: After open heart surgery it takes some time for the kidneys to eliminate the excess fluid. It tends to build up in the lungs and legs. Your cardiologist will be giving you a diuretic to eliminate the fluid. It may take several days.
