Elevated ESR: An ESR level is a general marker for inflammation. It can indicate an infection, blood vessel condition, or a cancer. Esr 100 is quite elevated. Would ensure a good cancer and vasculitis evaluation is done. In the elderly, an elevated ESR combined with shoulder/joint symptoms, and/or pain in the jaw or temple or visual change may indicate a temporal arteritis or a polymyalgia rheumatica.

Complicated: Esr is a very nonspecific test. It could be due to many many things. The question is why did the doctor order it to begin with? If the person is very elderly we should ask the question how aggressive..And again..Remember if its because of an ESR only and in the absence of symptoms ...I'd stop right here. If he has hepatic encephalopathy...Treat the route cause..If ssa could be any infection.
