Hearing: It could still be a hearing issue, in that his ability to understand what he hears is down. We call this speech discrimination. With the trouble he is having, the first step would be to get a comprehensive hearing test from an audiologist. Depending on the results, he may need other tests such as an auditory processing exam to check the pathways of hearing from the ear to the brain.
