My father has recently been diagnosed with cornea disease, and we are in the early stages of researching possible ways to fix this problem. we've been told about a fairly new procedure called dsaek. what is dsaek, and how does it differ from others?

DSAEK : Dsaek is a way to transplant just the posterior (backside) of the cornea as opposed to the whole central cornea in a true corneal transplant. The advantage, if your father is a candidate, is that the healing is dramatically faster (month as opposed to 6 or more months) and his original amount of glasses correction will not be significantly altered. It is the way to go if he is a candidate. Have an evaluation by a qualified cornea specialist.

When : When the inside layer of cells in the cornea has been damaged or disease ridden then the cornea will take on fluid and become cloudy. This new procedure has a faster recovery time. The inside layer of cells are removed and replaced using a donor.

DSAEK : Dsaek is a very safe, effective surgery to replace the inner layer of the cornea, known as the endothelial layer. It can only fix problems that involve that layer, so if your father has fuch's dystrophy, guttatta, or a post cataract surgery problem known as pbk, this surgery is a great choice with a fast recovery. If the problem is in any of the other levels of the cornea (such as a scar in the center of the cornea) then this surgery will not work. Dsaek is an outpatient procedure during which the inner layer is surgically removed, and replaced with a layer of the same cells from a donor cornea. It is painless, and has rapid recovery.
