Tender gallbladder: When the sonographer presses directly over the gallbladder, and the patient expresses pain, more than when the sonographer presses anywhere else, this is said to be a positive sonographic murphy sign. Technologist has benefit of visualizing gall bladder while placing pressure on gall bladder. Mild murphy sign is probably mild pain with maneuver. Sometimes sign of cholecystitis, inflammation of gb.

Pain: Murphy's sign is a descriptive term meaning pain over the gallbladder region while the technician performs the ultrasound procedure. The technician will tell the radiologist that you had pain during the test and it is reported. It has little or no meaning unless there is an abnormal finding on the ultrasound.
