Atenolol: Atenolol usually wouldn't cause what you describe, generally you'd have the symptoms all day and more in the first few hours after taking the drug. There are other causes for nocturnal cough/wheezing, you should discuss with your doctor.

Betablockers: In susceptible patients, betablockers such as atenolol could cause bronchospasm, i.e. Spasm of the airways, somewhat similar to asthma, causing shortness of breath and perhaps cough.
