Question: what is gestational diabetes really?

1 doctor answer
Dr. Quang Nguyen
Specializes in Endocrinology
Pregnancy: It's diabetes diagnosed during pregnancy. It accounts for about 7% of all pregnancies in the US. Anyone can get it and there are risk factors that can increase your risk of getting it. One thing for sure, if you have gestational DM, you are at risk for developing DM lifelong (not just during pregnancy). Thus if you have been diagnosed with GDM, get check for DM every 3 years lifelong.
