Requires evaluation: An eye exam by an ophthalmologist is recommended at the time gestational diabetes is diagnosed to rule out retinal disease that may worsen as the pregnancy continues. The presence of floaters may in rare circumstances indicate the presence of blood in the back part of the eye. A comprehensive ocular exam is warranted and should be done within the next several days if possible.
