A member asked:

Can you explain why doctors first recommend nicotine substitutes when the evidence indicates that cold turkey is the choice of most quitters?

Quitting Nicotine: This is easy. Most people do not quit at first on their own. They relapse and relapse and relapse and relapse. Many people are now socialized to think that they are not 'strong' enough to quit without nicotine replacement. I am sorry if your physician failed to teach you the realities, but many physicians have a full discussion about this before making recommendations.
