Try the stockings: I would make sure your heart, lungs and bloodwork is all ok before suggesting the problem is venous insufficiency, obesity could also be an issue. Save surgery as a last resort.

Stockings ok: You are female and 42 years old. You have bilateral leg swelling and your doctor notes venous incompetence. Stockings should be ok. First make sure you can have the correct fitting. Many patients can tolerate these if done correctly. Your doctor also may want to assess your cardiac function by echocardiography. Normal function is 75%. Be well.

Stockings: If your cardiac function is intact, stocking are a good start. Surgery should be kept as a last resort if conservative measures fail.
