A member asked:

What are the chances of getting a kidney transplant? how many months/years would you normally have to wait for one?

Several years: The wait is usually a long one unless a donor specifically volunteers to give you a kidney. The list of individuals needing a kidney is far longer than the list of donors.

Depends: This depends on your blood type, option for living donation, the region of the country you live in and other medical factors. Your transplant center should be able to tell you the average wait time for organs. Also ask about extended criteria donors.

Depends: It depends on where you are listed. For many large metropolitan areas in the U.S., the average waiting time is in excess of 5-6 years (NY, Chicago, Boston, LA, SF, etc). There are certain regions where the waiting time is not as long (Florida, Wisconsin, etc).
