Exam and x-ray: The best way to tell is with an exam of the area. If necessary, a radiograph or x-ray can also help determine what the cause of your pain might be.

Jaw pain: If the problem is worsened by hot or cold foods, or by gently touching the area in the mouth (palpate) most likely the tooth. If you get pain by opening your mouth like yawning, or moving jaw side to side, then tmj. These are simple things to try, but you should have it evaluated by dds. Most often an x-ray of the teeth and or jaw need be evaluated for an accurate diagnosis. Good luck.

Dentist & physician: An x-ray could show if the pain is coming from the wisdom tooth. A few simple tests by someone well-versed in TMJ diagnosis can determine if it might be related to your tmj. With your history of high blood pressure, you should also be aware that jaw pain can be a symptom of cardiovascular conditions or incident... Make sure you have that ruled out as well...
