Averages can vary: Your water needs depend on many factors, including your health, how active you are and where you live. The institute of medicine recommends 3 liters a day (13 cups) of fluids for men and 2.2 liters a day (9 cups) of fluids for women. Most "fluids" contain mainly water. Another answer is the 8/8 rule - (drink about 8 glasses of 8oz of water a day), cheers.

Enough to make urine: Drink enough water each day to make your urine clear. Drink more of your water during your morning & afternoon. Try to avoid drinking anything after dinner so that you won't have to wake up repeatedly to urinate, thereby affecting your sleep.
