A member asked:

Dad is diabetic and takes metformin. he does really well with it. his blood sugar levels are normal. but what causes the ammonia in the blood?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

What about it?: Metformin doesn't cause problems with ammonia in the blood. If your dad has severe liver disease and high ammonia levels, he should not be receiving metformin -- and a variety of other drugs that can cause problems in patients with liver disease. Check w/your doctor.
