A member asked:

I am taking metformin hcl 500 mg twice a day for a month to lower my blood sugar then i go back to my doctor to take another blood test if my blood sugar comes out normal or low will i still have to take metformin?

The Metformin is being used to stabilize your glucose levels, and if there is a normal outcome in one month, that confirms the success of the treatment and implies the benefits of continuing the approach. Your doctor may have other ideas on management, and since doctor knows you best, discuss what is most appropriate at followup. Do not stop on your own.

Metformin is a usual treatment for diabetes and if you have diabetes, you will need to continue taking the medication. If your blood glucose results improve your doctor will decide if to continue on this medication alone or add other drugs. Wish you good health!
