Why Medicate?: There is no 'reason' in your question for giving your young grandson this medication. Usually one would try other things like the right diet if he is have diarrhea. If he has a fever, the first thing to know is to not stop him up with immodium. The second thing to note is that fluid hydration is key. The brat diet is best for children with diarrhea: bananas, rice, unbuttered toast, apples.

In addition...: ...To what my colleagues have already said; diarrhea is often the body's way of getting something bad out of it, like something he ate, a virus, etc.. Immodium will keep whatever it is inside his intestines, and can prolong the illness and interfere with healing. Stop all juices, keep him well hydrated, and bring him to his doc if he has severe belly pain or there is blood in the diarrhea.
