Hypothyroidism: On some occasions, an underactive thyroid is due to the body's inability to produce viable thyroid hormone and that could be from either destruction of thyroid tissue usually from a virus or a lack of sufficient iodine. One must be careful supplementing with iodine, but it can be done with supervision. Make sure your doctor checks free and total T3 (liothyronine) and T4 also.

Common disorder: Hypothyroidism is a common disorder in women after menopause. It is typically caused by autoimmune destruction of the thyroid gland. In the us it is very unlikely to be related to iodine deficiency. Taking iodine for most causes of hypothyroidism make it worse, not better. Taking thyroid hormone is a natural remedy since you are taking the exact hormone that your thyroid should be making.

The only natural: Thing you can do is follow your doctor's orders, take the proper amount of brand name T4 replacement to keep your levels normal and stay away from any supplements, magic foods, etc that are supposed to help your thyroid, but won't. Don't get your medical information from friends, tv, or the internet.
