Which treatments for dementia are most cost-effective?

Generic medications: The only approved treatments for dementia are those for alzheimer's disease, which include the cholinesterase inhibitors: donepezil, galantamine (galantamine hydrobromide) and rivastigmine and the nmda antagonist memantine. Only donepezil and galantamine (galantamine hydrobromide) are generic. If by cost-effective you are asking which med gives the most bang for the buck then they are all only mildly effective and relatively similar in benefits.

Those that work: If there is a treatable underlying cause, identifying and treating it is the answer. Frequent treatable causes are depression, medication, hormone imbalances, sleep deprivation/apnea, or general medical illness not treated. Namenda/aricept offers some delay in progression and therefore often in the nursing home placement. Newer strategies being researched are Insulin inhalation and coconut oil.
